Bold and easy coloring, explained: thick lines, big shapes, finished in an evening
Bold and easy is the coloring style that took over the bestseller lists from 2024: thick outlines, big spaces and cute, cozy scenes you can finish in one sitting. Here is what defines it, measured on real pages, why so many adults love it, and how to pick pages that suit you.
Updated October 28, 2026 · 15 sources

The short version
- Bestselling bold and easy pages have one even outline 1.1 to 2 mm thick and about 30 to 190 spaces. Intricate adult pages run 0.4 mm and 400 spaces or more.
- A page takes about 20 to 60 minutes with markers. Coco Wyo itself sells its Bold & Easy tier as the 30-minute option.
- Adults choose it because detailed books feel overwhelming, because they can finish a page in one evening, and because thick lines are easier with tremors, arthritis or weaker hands.
- Coco Wyo and Bobbie Goods made it a bestseller. Cheap AI-made copies followed, and colorists have learned to spot them.
- On our site, Easy means 95 spaces or fewer with a 1.7 mm line (15 to 45 minutes). Under 60 spaces is the large and simple end.
What bold and easy means
Bold and easy pages have thick outlines, big shapes and very little fine detail. The subjects are usually round, cute animals in cozy settings. Book Riot describes it as the opposite of the intricate adult books of 2015 and 2016, the mandalas and dense gardens that took hours and a 0.3 mm pen. Sarah Renae Clark, who colored her way through Amazon's top 100, calls bold and easy "like a beginner step".
The clearest published definition comes from Coco Wyo, the brand most associated with the style, which sorts its books by the time you have:
| Coco Wyo tier | Time per page, by their FAQ |
|---|---|
| Mini books | 5 to 10 minute breaks |
| Bold & Easy | "Only got 30 minutes?" |
| Cute & Comfy | "an hour or two" |
| Classic, highly detailed | 3 hours or more |
Colorists' own timings agree. Chloe Rose Art took "a little bit over an hour" on a Coco Wyo page with markers, Sarah Renae Clark finished one in 20 minutes, and Mira Byler found colored pencils took about three times as long as markers on the same kind of page.

The numbers: line weight and spaces, measured
Most articles say bold and easy lines are "2 to 4 mm" and pages have "5 to 15 spaces". Real bestsellers don't look like that. We measured interior pages from the brands' own listing images and free PDFs, scaled to the printed page, and counted every enclosed space bigger than a speck:
| Page | Outline | Spaces | Median space |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coco Wyo, simplest book (Stress Relief, 5 pages) | 1.76 to 1.98 mm | 32 to 79 | 54 to 101 mm² |
| Coco Wyo, cozy scene book (Spooky Cutie, 4 pages) | 1.12 to 1.26 mm | 134 to 188 | 20 to 45 mm² |
| Coco Wyo free social pages (7) | 0.90 to 1.42 mm | 38 to 169 | 11 to 29 mm² |
| Bobbie Goods paid printables | 0.65 to 0.81 mm | large shapes | 75 to 86 mm² |
| For comparison: a free "for adults" gallery page | 0.42 mm | 411 | 18 mm² |
| Our easy pages | 1.7 mm | 95 or fewer |
Three things stand out:
- One line weight per page. The outline barely varies within a page (0.2 to 0.4 mm between thin and thick parts), with round ends and no tapering. Mixed thick and thin lines are the first thing colorists check for in an AI-made book.
- "Easy" comes from the line or from the shapes. Coco Wyo uses a heavy line; Bobbie Goods uses a much thinner line around big, simple shapes. Both feel easy.
- Small spaces still exist (eye highlights, flower centers, bubbles of 3 to 5 mm²), but there are few of them: 5 to 44 spaces under 10 mm² per page.
What the pages look like
- Characters: chunky, round-bodied bears, cats, bunnies, dogs and frogs with big heads, two dot eyes, a small snout and a tiny mouth. No pupils or lashes; the blush is left for you.
- Scenes: one room or shopfront full of props: shelves of jars, a bathtub with bubbles, tiled floors, curtains, plants, mushrooms and round five-petal flowers.
- Patterns as shapes: checkered tiles, scalloped awnings and roof shingles are drawn as large spaces to fill, never as texture.
- No shading in the line art: no hatching, no gray, just a few short strokes for grass or fluff. Shadows are yours to add.
- Two layouts: a full scene inside a rounded frame, or a single object floating on white.
Many colorists treat these pages as a canvas for effects: night scenes with glowing windows, rain, all-pink palettes. Colour with Claire points out the practical side of the thick line: it gives "that little bit of room for bleed" when alcohol marker ink spreads.
What is cozy coloring?
Cozy coloring is about the subject: comfort, rest and small domestic pleasures. Reading nooks, kitchens, cafes, bakeries, rainy windows, a cat asleep in the laundry. The Conversation, writing about why adult coloring is back on the bestseller lists, sums up the themes as "comfort, relaxation, and rest". Publishers Weekly adds the look: "simple drawings and a kawaii-influenced art style", with a "creepy cute" branch for Halloween.
Sarah Renae Clark splits the trend in two: "cute and fuzzy hygge", full scenes of animals doing chores, and bold and easy, with thicker lines and fewer things to color. In practice they overlap. Cozy scene pages tend to have more spaces and slightly thinner lines (the 134 to 188 spaces and 1.1 to 1.3 mm in the table above); the simplest bold and easy pages are often one object on white.

Why adults love it
Detailed books felt like work
The most liked comments under the two biggest videos about the trend say the same thing. "Too many details can be overwhelming" (4,900 likes, under Sarah Renae Clark's video) and "I get wayyyyy too overwhelmed by the super detailed coloring books" (4,200 likes, under Chloe Rose Art's). On r/Coloring, people describe tiny spaces as mentally exhausting and thick lines with open shapes as "much more relaxing and less like a task". Sarah Renae Clark's view is that the old books' detail "adds a lot of pressure", and that bold and easy "filled a huge gap" without being aimed at kids.
You finish a page in one evening
"I don't have 5 hours... But I do have 20 minutes", one commenter wrote. Finishing matters: a done page on the fridge after one sitting is a different feeling from a page you abandon at 40 %. Some colorists recolor the same page a year later to see how far they have come.
Easier on the hands
Accessibility comes up again and again. "Without overstraining my joints" got 1,100 likes under Chloe Rose Art's video. Other colorists mention tremors ("lines are also easier to stay within"), chronic pain, dyspraxia, cerebral palsy and a heavy hand. One commenter's grandmother found bold, simpler pages "a huge hit" at her assisted living facility, and a dementia carer called coloring the only activity her stepmother could still do. The Alzheimer's Association's advice fits the style: keep activities on an adult level, nothing childish, and no pressure to finish.
Calm, with honest limits
Many people find coloring calming, and small studies agree in the short term: 10 to 20 minutes of coloring lowered anxiety in a dozen small trials, almost all with university students. The effect after a week is weak or absent, and one study found unguided coloring did not change anxiety at all (Mantzios and Giannou, 2018). It is a pleasant way to unwind; it is not a treatment.

Our tip: Use bold and easy pages to practice one technique at a time, such as a glow or a cast shadow, without the pressure of a 5-hour page.
Who made it popular
The origin is disputed. Many colorists credit Meg Miles of Meg Publishing, whose ASMR-style coloring videos reached half a million views on TikTok in spring 2024, and r/Coloring threads about bold and easy books date back to February 2024 (Book Riot). Two brands then turned the style into a bestseller category. We are not affiliated with either.
Coco Wyo
Coco Wyo's own books are printed through Amazon: square 8.5 x 8.5 in, 40 to 52 single-sided designs each, and two of them have over 8,000 ratings at 4.8 stars. Penguin Random House now publishes 8 x 8 in editions at about $8 to $10. When Sarah Renae Clark went through Amazon's top 100 coloring books, 64 were cute or bold and easy and 19 were Coco Wyo. Publishers Weekly, citing Circana BookScan, reports 16.7 million coloring books sold in the US in 2025 (up 18 %) and puts Coco Wyo at about a quarter of the category in 2026. Google searches for the brand are still growing.
Bobbie Goods
Bobbie Goods is the brand of American illustrator Abbie Goveia, published since 2021: landscape books of anthropomorphized animals in everyday situations, with a recurring cast. The books are $22, with 20 perforated pages on 100 lb uncoated paper (148 gsm) and a color test page. In Brazil, HarperCollins Brasil sold more than 2.5 million copies in seven months (Wikipedia), and a Bobbie Goods marker set made with Ohuhu sold out in under 24 hours. US search interest has fallen since its 2023 peak.
The term itself stays free for everyone. Coco Wyo filed trademark applications for several phrases in 2024, "Bold-Easy Coloring Book" among them according to Book Riot, and dropped all of them except its own name after a backlash on r/Coloring and TikTok.
What colorists don't love
- Thin paper. Coco Wyo's Amazon-printed books are about 80 gsm, and alcohol markers bleed through, drain ink and go splotchy. Colorists report the Penguin Random House editions use thicker paper. This is the main reason people print pages themselves on cardstock: see how to print coloring pages.
- Huge empty areas. Pencil users find big floors and skies slow: "the main part of this picture is floor".
- Sameness. "It's getting repetitive" after a few books in the same style.
- Overbuying. Under Bobina Loves Portraits' video, a comment calling Copics on cheap books "INSANE" got 6,000 likes. A 24 to 48 color set is plenty for these pages.
The AI-book problem
A simple style is easy to imitate, and AI-generated copies followed the trend onto Amazon. It is the number one trust complaint among colorists. The r/Coloring checklist for spotting them, and the tells colorists name in videos:
- Inconsistent line thickness within one picture: "AI often mixes thick and thin lines in one image whereas artists usually stay consistent".
- Lines that "disappear into nothing", objects merging into each other, scribbles where a tree should be.
- Extra or missing fingers and limbs, nonsense props (grass inside a house, leaves hanging in the air), gibberish words.
- Faces that change style from page to page, no named artist, no interior previews, and 40 to 50 designs for $5 to $7.
Buyers pay for it in frustration: "I felt frustrated, not relaxed", read one review Chloe Rose Art quoted. From November 1, 2026, r/Coloring and r/AdultColoring ban AI-generated content. Accusations cut both ways, though: Coco Wyo itself was accused of using AI because it released books so fast, and says its art is drawn by hand, sketched on paper and finished on a tablet. Sarah Renae Clark warns that AI detectors get things wrong and false accusations hurt real artists. Counterfeit Bobbie Goods books with AI pages have also turned up in Brazil.

How to choose pages
Every page on our site shows its number of spaces, a level and a time estimate with markers. The levels come from the space count, so they compare directly with the books measured above:
| Our level | Spaces | Line | With markers | Comparable to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | 95 or fewer | 1.7 mm | 15 to 45 min | Coco Wyo's simplest books (32 to 79) |
| Medium | 96 to 170 | 1.7 mm, or 1.35 mm above 120 spaces | 45 to 75 min | Cozy scene books (134 to 188) |

- New to coloring, or 30 minutes free: start with an Easy page. Every one of them is in the bold and easy collection.
- Tremors, arthritis, low vision or seniors: pick pages under 60 spaces, and print them big. On 11 x 17 in or A3 paper the line grows to about 2.2 to 2.4 mm.
- Colored pencils: lean toward Medium. Pencils take about three times as long, and the huge open areas of the simplest pages get tedious.
- Want to practice shading or glow effects: Medium cozy rooms give you lamps, windows and furniture to cast shadows from.

Our tip
What to color them with
Bold and easy pages were made for alcohol markers: thick lines hide the slight spread of the ink, and big spaces fill fast with a brush tip. They work just as well with pencils and water-based markers.
| Tool | What colorists use | About, Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Alcohol markers | Ohuhu Honolulu or Honolulu B, 48 colors, with a brush tip | $40 to $45 |
| Alcohol markers, the Bobbie Goods palette | Bobbie Goods x Ohuhu, 48 colors + blender | $55 |
| Budget markers | Ohuhu Oahu 40 (chisel and fine, no brush) | $25 |
| Colored pencils | Prismacolor Premier 24; Soucolor or KALOUR 72 for big areas | $12 to $25 |
| Highlights | White gel pen: Uni-ball Signo UM-153 or Sakura Gelly Roll | about $5 |
Keep the palette short: 3 to 5 colors repeated across the page look more finished than 30. For the full comparison read the best markers for coloring books, and for smooth, streak-free fills how to color with alcohol markers.

Questions people ask
What is a bold and easy coloring book?
A coloring book with thick, even outlines, big shapes and little fine detail, usually cute animals and cozy everyday scenes. Measured on bestselling books, the outlines are 1.1 to 2 mm wide and a page has about 30 to 190 spaces, against 0.4 mm lines and 400 or more spaces on a typical intricate adult page. Most pages take 20 to 60 minutes with markers.
What is cozy coloring?
Cozy coloring is the subject side of the same trend: warm domestic scenes such as reading nooks, kitchens, cafes, bakeries and bathtubs full of bubbles, often with round animal characters doing ordinary things. Most cozy pages are drawn in the bold and easy style, though cozy scene books have more spaces and slightly thinner lines than the simplest bold and easy books.
Are bold and easy coloring pages just for kids?
No. The style took off with adults who found detailed books overwhelming, and the subjects are adult everyday life: coffee, baking, laundry, a bath, a good book. Thick lines also make it a favorite with people who have tremors, arthritis or weaker hands, and with seniors. Kids enjoy the pages too.
Who started bold and easy coloring?
No single person. Many colorists credit Meg Miles of Meg Publishing, whose ASMR-style coloring videos took off on TikTok in spring 2024, and r/Coloring threads about bold and easy books go back to February 2024. Coco Wyo and Bobbie Goods are the two brands that made the style a bestseller.
How thick are the lines in bold and easy coloring books?
From our measurements of the brands' own sample pages: 1.76 to 1.98 mm on Coco Wyo's simplest books, 1.1 to 1.3 mm on its busier cozy scene books, and 0.65 to 0.8 mm on Bobbie Goods printables, which stay easy through big shapes instead. Our easy pages use 1.7 mm.
Are bold and easy coloring books made with AI?
Many cheap ones are. Colorists spot them by uneven line thickness, lines that fade into nothing, merged objects, extra fingers and a style that changes from page to page. Books with a named artist and an online presence are the safest buy. Our own pages are AI-assisted and we say so on our about page.
