The best markers for coloring books, and the paper that stops the bleed

Most cozy and bold-and-easy pages are colored with one kind of marker: a 48-color alcohol set with a brush tip. Here is which set to buy, what the cheaper and fancier routes get you, and why the paper matters as much as the pen.

The short version

  • Default: an Ohuhu Honolulu or Honolulu B 48 (brush tip), about $40 to $45 in October 2026. Under a dollar a marker.
  • Budget: Ohuhu Oahu 40 at about $25 (no brush tip), or water-based Ohuhu Maui 60 at about $22 if you color on copy paper or with kids.
  • Every alcohol marker bleeds through 80 gsm book paper. Print on 65 lb cardstock (176 gsm) and keep 3 to 4 scrap sheets under the page.
  • 24 to 48 colors is plenty: a bold-and-easy page looks best with 3 to 5 colors plus one accent.
  • Add a white gel pen (Uni-ball Signo UM-153 or Gelly Roll, about $5) for highlights.
  • Skip Copic, 120+ color sets and "bleed-proof" promises until you know what you miss.

Quick picks

Prices are the brand's own or a large US retailer's, checked on October 28, 2026. They move weekly, and sets go on sale before the holidays. "Bleed" means on ordinary 80 gsm coloring-book paper.

Alcohol, water-based, acrylic or brush pens

The marker type decides how smooth the color looks and how much it bleeds. The brand matters much less.

Alcohol markers

This is what you see in nearly every cozy "color with me" video. The ink stays wet for a couple of seconds, so neighboring strokes melt together into a flat, even fill, and a second tone laid into wet ink blends softly. That is why big shapes in bold-and-easy pages look so clean in marker.

The trade-offs: the ink goes straight through thin paper (see bleed-through below), it can lift black lines printed on an inkjet printer, and it fades. Thaneeya McArdle points out that every alcohol marker, Copic included, is dye-based: some colors fade within weeks in sunlight, and blues, greens and violets go first. "Permanent" on the barrel means water-resistant; it says nothing about light. Keep finished pages out of the sun and scan the ones you love.

Water-based markers and brush pens

Tombow Dual Brush, Ohuhu Maui and kids' markers carry their color in water. Coloring Dojo's paper tests only saw them bleed on 60 to 80 gsm paper with heavy strokes, so they suit copy paper, double-sided books and children. They don't stay wet long enough to blend like alcohol ink: color each shape in one pass and stop. Going over a dry area again lifts the paper surface into little balls (pilling). Bobbie Goods lists water-based markers among the tools for its books. Thaneeya McArdle notes that water-based dye markers fade even faster than alcohol ones unless the ink is pigment-based.

"Brush pen" only describes the tip. Tombow's brush pens are water-based; Ohuhu Honolulu has an alcohol brush tip. Read the ink type on the box.

Acrylic markers for coloring books

Acrylic paint markers lay down opaque paint. They are the finishing tool, used after the base colors. Caro's Art Studio keeps Arrtx acrylic brush markers next to her Ohuhu sets; soph coloring uses Ohuhu and GuangNa acrylics; A Pictured Purpose finishes pages with them and uses them to rescue a blend that went wrong. Sarah Renae Clark's view: even a messy page looks good once you add a few acrylic pen highlights.

  • Good for: white and pastel details on dark areas, small patterns (dots, stripes, snowflakes), covering a slip that alcohol ink can't hide.
  • Not for: filling a whole page. They sit on top as paint, so they don't melt into each other the way alcohol ink does.
  • On thin paper: a user of a Coco Wyo workbook said acrylic "rips through" and bled even with paper underneath. Use them on cardstock, and lightly.
  • Before use: Posca-type markers must be shaken and primed (pressed down until paint flows), or the first marks are a colorless liquid.

Ohuhu Honolulu, Honolulu B or Oahu

Ohuhu is the default brand for cozy coloring: its markers are in most of the videos, and it now titles its listings "Adults Cozy Coloring". The three lines differ only by their tips:

LineTipsInk per marker48-ish set, about
HonoluluBrush + chisel3 ml$40 (48 colors)
Honolulu BBrush (1 to 6 mm) + fine (1 to 2 mm)3 ml$40 to $45 (48 colors)
OahuChisel + fine, no brush2 ml$25 (40 colors)

Get a brush tip. A brush bends into corners and covers a big shape fast, which is most of a bold-and-easy page. Kolorio's set guide recommends Honolulu for big open areas and Honolulu B for more control on details. Between those two, pick by what you prefer on the other end: a chisel for crisp straight edges, or a fine tip for eyes and tiny flower centers.

ShrimpyHow to ACTUALLY Color with Alcohol Markers, 1.3M views

His first point is the tip: he "absolutely" dislikes the fine tip for coloring, and says the usual beginner mistake is buying a fine + chisel set without a brush. He fills with the brush and keeps strokes overlapping.

Our tip: If a set says fine + chisel only, it is an Oahu-type set. Fine for a budget, but know what you are giving up.

Ohuhu's own prices for the Honolulu line in October 2026: 24 colors $24.99, 48 from $39.99, 72 from $69.99, 104 from $79.99, 120 from $99.99, 320 from $244.99. Replacement brush nibs cost $9.99. A 16 ml refill bottle ($4.99) refills a Honolulu marker about five times, according to Parka Blogs' review; the nib usually wears out before the ink runs out. Store markers lying flat.

Color codes changed in 2025

Ohuhu renumbered its colors in 2025. A palette you find online may use the old codes. Coloring Bliss publishes both charts and an old-to-new conversion; check which system a video uses before you buy single markers to match it.

The Bobbie Goods and Coco Wyo sets

The two brands that made the bold-and-easy style popular both sell an Ohuhu set. Both are Honolulu B (brush + fine) with 48 colors. The markers are the same as in a standard set; you pay for the palette and the extras.

Should you buy one? If you already color those books and love their palette, the curated colors save you the guesswork: Taylah Maree uses that set in her cozy coloring tips video. If you mostly want markers, a plain Honolulu B 48 costs $10 to $15 less, and you can pick your own palette per page. Don't pay resale prices: the set gets restocked.

The plastic sheet is not a blotter

Both kits include a plastic sheet to slide behind the page. It stops ink reaching the next page, but plastic absorbs nothing, so ink pools on the page you are coloring. Caro's Art Studio also found the Ohuhu sheet too small for the books. Put scrap paper between the page and the sheet.

Budget routes

Bobina Loves Portraits' advice to new colorists: 12 to 48 colors, under $100 all in. Her comment section agrees: a viewer's "try it with what I have" rule got 1,500 likes. Four ways to start cheap:

  1. Ohuhu Honolulu 24 basic, about $25. The cheapest way to get a brush tip from a known brand.
  2. Ohuhu Oahu 40, about $25. More colors, no brush. The chisel still fills big shapes well.
  3. Ohuhu Maui 60 water-based, about $22. 60 colors that rarely bleed, fine on copy paper. Less smooth than alcohol.
  4. No-name 60-color sets, about $16. They sell by the thousands each month. Cheap markers vs the viral pages is one of the most watched questions on YouTube, but none of the colorists cited here uses one as a main set, and quality varies by listing.

Our tip

The cheapest upgrade is better paper: 65 lb cardstock (176 gsm) costs about 4 cents a page and makes a $25 set color more evenly and bleed less than a $140 one on thin paper.

Bleed-through, ghosting and paper weight

Bleed-through is ink reaching the next page. Ghosting is color you can see from the back while the back stays dry. Feathering is ink spreading past the edge along the paper fibers. All three come from the paper, so no alcohol marker is "bleed-proof".

How often alcohol markers bleed through, by paper weight (Coloring Dojo's table), with the papers people color on. Book paper is a typical indie coloring book; the Bobbie Goods figure is its 100 lb text paper.

What colorists and brands report:

  • Indie coloring books (about 80 gsm): alcohol bleeds through. Coco Wyo prints its books one-sided for that reason, and its Amazon-printed editions are thin; Penguin editions have noticeably thicker paper.
  • Bobbie Goods books (100 lb text, about 148 gsm): the brand says alcohol markers "will show on the back side". Some colorists also find the thick uncoated paper makes fills blotchy.
  • Thick cardstock: Chloe Rose Art's marker bled through a thick cardstock backing, and she warns that a sheet of printer paper behind the page won't save you.
  • Marker pads: vibrant, but Baylee Jae's "bleed-proof" pad still bled.
  • Thin paper drains markers: "absorbs all the ink of your markers", as Bobina puts it. Your set runs dry faster on cheap paper.

The fix is to print your pages. "I either sacrifice the back page or scan and print" is the standard answer on r/Coloring. For alcohol markers:

Whatever you print on, put 3 to 4 scrap sheets or a piece of cardstock under the page. Watch the "110 lb" trap: 110 lb index is 199 gsm, 110 lb cover is about 300 gsm, and listings mix them up. All our coloring pages are free PDFs in US Letter and A4 with 1/2 in margins, so they print at Actual size on cardstock. The printing guide covers trays, settings and inkjet vs laser.

How many colors you actually need

A bold-and-easy page needs 3 to 5 colors and one accent. Taylah Maree's main tip is to keep the palette short and repeat it: the same brown on the tree, the box and the window frame. Little Stardust Press gives a formula: two main colors, one neutral, one darker shade and one small accent, each main color used in 2 or 3 places.

Bear barista in a tiny cafe coloring page, blank line art

The blank page

Colored: a brown family, two pastels and a green

A full cafe scene still only needs a short palette: browns for the bear, coffee and counter, pink and blue for the cups, green for the plant.

So what does a set need to have?

  • 24 colors: enough for single objects and simple scenes, with few shading options.
  • 48 colors: the sweet spot. Light and dark versions of the main families, so you can shade.
  • 72 to 120: useful once you shade a lot or want many greens and browns.
  • 320: for collectors. One of the most liked comments under Bobina's video: "300+ markers for this is kinda wild".

When you add markers, Kolorio lists the usual gaps after a first set: skin tones, muted greens, warm and cool grays, and deep shadow colors. A couple of grays matched to your palette go a long way: Caro's Art Studio shades reds with a red gray and greens with a green gray. Shrimpy's short on coloring with a small collection has 12.6M views; you don't need many to get good results.

Easy pages that work with a 24 or 48 set: one main object, big shapes.

White gel pens for highlights

A white pen is the cheapest finishing tool: a dot in each eye, a curve on a mug, a line across a window. Add it last, on dry ink. The two pens colorists name most:

PenAbout, Oct 2026What colorists say
Uni-ball Signo Broad UM-153 white$5 for 2Caro's Art Studio and Chloe Rose Art prefer it; generally reported as the more opaque gel pen
Sakura Gelly Roll white$6 for 3 sizesKristina Hunter Art uses it; finer and easier to control. Chloe Rose Art calls it "trash": opinions split
Posca or other white paint pensvariesThe most opaque in a Well-Appointed Desk comparison; shake and prime first

Sarah Renae Clark compared more than 60 white pens and now prefers paint pens (Meeden) and a white Copic. Highlights are her "not so secret weapon". The alcohol marker guide shows where to put them.

What not to buy

  • Copic, to start. A Copic Sketch is $7.99 a marker at list price (358 colors), Ciao $5.49. Per marker, a 48 Ohuhu set works out near $0.92, Ciao about $3.90 and Sketch about $5.85. A comment under Bobina's video with 6,000 likes calls Copics on cheap Amazon coloring books insane. Copics are refillable and last for years: a fine upgrade once you know you love this.
  • A fine + chisel set when you wanted a brush. Read the tips on the box (see Shrimpy above).
  • A 120 to 320 set as your first. You can't learn which colors you use from a 320 set. Start at 24 to 48 and add families later.
  • "Bleed-proof" promises. Bleed depends on the paper and the blotter. Every source here, brands included, says to put something behind the page.
  • Watercolor or mixed-media paper for markers. Thaneeya McArdle and Baylee Jae both warn that it soaks up ink, pills and wears out nibs.
  • A plastic sheet as your only backing. Ink pools on it. Scrap paper first.

Thaneeya McArdleArt is Fun, on fading

Shows that all alcohol markers fade, Copic included, and that a few colors can go within weeks. A higher price buys more colors and refills; it doesn't buy light-fastness.

Our tip: If you plan to frame a page, scan it the day you finish, and hang it away from windows.

Try your markers

Start with a page that has big shapes and few small details: our bold and easy pages have 1.7 mm outlines that hide a little spread, and every one is a free PDF you can print on cardstock and reprint if a color goes wrong. Then read how to color with alcohol markers for streak-free fills, blending and shading.

Questions people ask

Which markers don't bleed through paper?

Water-based markers such as Tombow Dual Brush, Ohuhu Maui or Crayola rarely bleed: Coloring Dojo only saw it on 60 to 80 gsm paper with heavy strokes. Every alcohol marker (Ohuhu, Copic, Arrtx, Sharpie) bleeds through thin book paper, so the fix is the paper and a blotter, not the brand: print on 65 lb cardstock (176 gsm) or heavier and keep 3 to 4 scrap sheets under the page.

What are the best markers for adult coloring books?

For bold-and-easy and cozy books, the set most colorists use is an Ohuhu Honolulu or Honolulu B with 48 colors, about $40 to $45 in October 2026. It has a brush tip for big areas and costs under a dollar a marker. Copic is lovely but costs 4 to 6 times more per marker and is not needed for these pages.

Ohuhu Honolulu or Oahu?

Honolulu (brush + chisel) or Honolulu B (brush + fine) if you can. Oahu (chisel + fine, about $25 for 40 colors) has no brush tip, and colorist Shrimpy calls buying fine + chisel by mistake the classic beginner error. Oahu still works on big flat shapes with the chisel; it is the budget pick.

Is the Bobbie Goods Ohuhu set worth it?

It is a Honolulu B 48 (brush + fine) with a palette picked by Bobbie Goods, a colorless blender, a swatch card, a plastic sheet and a case, at $54.99. That is about $10 to $15 more than a plain 48 set for the curated colors and the case. Worth it if you love that palette; otherwise a standard 48 gives the same markers.

How many markers do you need for coloring books?

24 to 48. Bold-and-easy pages look best with 3 to 5 colors plus an accent, repeated across the page. Add grays, skin tones and deeper shades later, when you know which ones you miss.

Can you use acrylic markers in coloring books?

Yes, for details on top: highlights, small patterns, light colors over dark ones, and covering mistakes. Colorists such as Caro's Art Studio and soph coloring keep a set beside their alcohol markers. On thin book paper they can soak through: one user of a Coco Wyo workbook said acrylic ripped through the page and bled even with paper underneath.
